Estimated Payment Vouchers (Form 540-ES)
Form 540-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals, is used to make estimated California income tax payments for the next tax year.
Select Begin to generate estimated payment vouchers.
Who Should Use Form 540-ES?
You may need to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe California income tax and do not have enough tax withheld throughout the year.
Common examples include taxpayers with:
- Self-employment income
- Business income
- Rental income
- Investment income
- Retirement income with little or no withholding
- Partnership or S Corporation income
How Does This Affect My Return?
Form 540-ES does not affect the current year's California return. Instead, it creates vouchers that may be used to make payments toward your next year's California tax liability.

Installment Agreement (Form 3567)
Use Form 3567 to request an installment payment agreement with the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB).
An installment agreement may allow you to make monthly payments if you are unable to pay your California tax liability in full by the due date.
California Schedule D Capital Gain or Loss Adjustment
Use this section to report California adjustments related to capital gains and losses.
California and federal tax laws do not always treat certain capital gain and loss transactions the same way. Schedule D adjustments allow you to report any required California differences.
Payment for Automatic Extension (Form 3519)
Form FTB 3519, Payment for Automatic Extension for Individuals, is used to submit a payment when requesting additional time to file a California return.
Select Begin to generate Form 3519.
Important
California generally grants an automatic extension of time to file; however, any tax expected to be owed should be paid by the original filing deadline.
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.
When Should Form 3519 Be Used?
Form 3519 may be used when:
- You expect to owe California tax.
- You cannot file by the original due date.
- You want to submit a payment with your extension to reduce penalties and interest.
How Does This Affect My Return?
Payments made using Form 3519 are applied to your California tax liability and may:
- Reduce your balance due.
- Increase your refund.
- Reduce penalties and interest associated with unpaid tax.

Form 3568 (Alternative Dependent Exemptions)
Use Form 3568 to claim the Alternative Dependent Exemption when applicable.
This form is generally used by taxpayers who support qualifying dependents but are unable to claim the regular dependent exemption under certain circumstances.
Underpayment of Estimated Tax (Form 5805)
Form 5805, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals and Fiduciaries, is used to determine whether a penalty applies because sufficient tax was not paid during the year through withholding and estimated tax payments.
Select Begin to complete Form 5805.
When Might Form 5805 Be Required?
You may need Form 5805 if:
- You owe tax when filing your return.
- You did not make enough estimated tax payments.
- Your withholding was insufficient to cover your California tax liability.
What Does Form 5805 Do?
Form 5805 is used to:
- Calculate an underpayment penalty.
- Determine whether an exception to the penalty applies.
- Annualize income when income was earned unevenly throughout the year.
How Does This Affect My Return?
If a penalty applies, Form 5805 may:
- Increase the amount of tax due.
- Calculate the allowable underpayment penalty.
- Determine whether penalty relief is available based on your circumstances.
