If you requested additional time to file your California return and made a payment with your extension, enter that payment in this section so you receive credit for the amount already paid.

When Should I Use This Section?
Use this section if:
- You requested an extension of time to file your California return; and
- You made a payment with your extension request.
Enter the total payment you submitted with the extension.
What Payments Should Be Entered?
Enter any payment made with your California extension, including:
- Electronic extension payments
- Online payments made before the filing deadline
- Check or money order payments submitted with an extension request
- Payments made using Form FTB 3519, Payment for Automatic Extension for Individuals
Only enter payments that have not already been reported elsewhere on the return.
Does California Require a Separate Extension Form?
California generally grants an automatic extension of time to file for qualifying taxpayers.
However, if you made an extension payment, you should ensure the payment amount is entered correctly so you receive proper credit on your return.
Important
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.
Any tax expected to be owed should generally be paid by the original filing deadline to avoid:
- Late payment penalties
- Interest charges on unpaid taxes
How Do I Find My Extension Payment Amount?
Review your records for:
- Payment confirmations
- Bank records
- Electronic payment receipts
- Form FTB 3519 payment records
- Canceled checks
Enter only the amount actually paid with the extension.
How Does This Affect My Return?
An extension payment is treated as a tax payment and may:
- Increase your California refund.
- Reduce your California balance due.
- Reduce penalties and interest related to unpaid taxes.
Failure to enter a valid extension payment could result in the return showing a larger balance due than expected.
Notes
- Enter only payments made with your California extension.
- Do not enter withholding reported on Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099, 592-B, or 593 in this section.
- Extension payments are separate from estimated tax payments.
- Keep copies of extension payment confirmations with your tax records.
- The payment amount entered should match the amount paid to the California Franchise Tax Board.
