Before you begin your tax return in the do-it-yourself program, gather the information below to help ensure a smooth filing process.
1. Prior Year Tax Return
- You will need your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your previous year’s Form 1040 (Line 11).
- This is typically required to verify your identity when electronically filing.
- If you filed with the same account last year and your return was accepted, this information may already be available.
To learn more about this, please visit How do I get my self-select PIN/AGI?
2. Social Security Numbers (SSNs)
Make sure you have accurate Social Security numbers for:
- The primary taxpayer
- Your spouse (if filing jointly or separately)
- All dependents listed on your return
3. Tax Documents
Collect all relevant income and reporting forms, including (but not limited to):
- W-2 forms (wages)
- 1099 forms (miscellaneous income, interest, dividends, etc.)
- 1099-B (stock or investment sales)
- IRA contribution or distribution records
- Health Savings Account (HSA) information, etc.
4. Expense Records and Receipts
If you plan to claim deductions or report self-employment income, gather supporting documentation such as:
- Medical and dental expense receipts (if itemizing deductions)
- Mortgage interest and real estate tax statements
- Business income and expense records (for self-employed individuals or independent contractors completing Schedule C)
Important Note About Deductions
- The program will automatically determine whether to use the standard deduction or itemized deductions, based on which provides the greater benefit.
