What is the electronic signature?
Where can I find my prior year Self-Select E-file PIN?
When you electronically file a tax return, your Self-Select E-file PIN will be listed on Form 8879.
What is my AGI?
Your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) is the amount shown on Form 1040, line 11, from your prior year's tax return.
- If you did not file a prior year return, enter $0 for the AGI amount or select "No, I did not electronically file".
- If you do not know your AGI, you can request a transcript from the IRS for the prior year AGI amount.
What if this is the first time I've filed?
If this is your first tax return or if you did not file a return last year, your prior year e-file signature PIN will be left blank, and your Prior Year AGI will be "$0".
You will then be prompted to create a new five-digit Self-Select PIN to electronically sign and file this year's tax return. Tip: The IRS may ask for this PIN later to confirm your identity. Write it down and keep it in a safe place.
What if I used this same tax software last year?
When you use the same account (username) each year, we'll save your information and import it for you when you file next year - so you won't need to re-enter it.
- The five-digit PIN you created for your current return (used as your signature) will automatically carry forward to your next year's return as the Prior Year PIN.
- Your Prior Year AGI will also carry forward.
