Original Federal Return Information
When preparing to file an amended return, it is crucial to ensure that all the information listed matches what is on your most recently filed and accepted return. The information provided here reflects what was listed in the program when the e-file was accepted by the IRS. If you filed with us using the same username, the information will be carried forward. However, it is important to review the infomration for accuracy as you are the preparer.
When filing an amended return, the focus should be on accurately reporting any changes to income, deductions, credits, or tax liability. When reviewing the "Original Federal Return Information," pay specioal attention to the area "Overpayment, if any, as shown on original return or as previously adjusted by the IRS" to add or remove the amount of refund received by the IRS. The "Amount of tax paid with original return plus additional tax paid after it was filed" may need adjustment based on the amount paid to the IRS with the tax return or at the IRS.gov website after the original return was filed.
The refund amount on the amended return will change in the program as the changes are made.
Note: it is important to note that the refund shown is not the refund for the amended return. Instead, it reflects the refund as if you had originally filed the return with the corrections. To see the actual refund or amount due for the amended return, you need to refer to the 1040X in the PDF.
Make Corrections for Federal Amended Return
Return to the Federal section of the program. You can then add, edit, or remove entries as needed and the changes will be reflected on your amended return. Once the changes have been made, you will re-select "20XX Amended Return" to return to the Amended Return Main Menu.
Create Amended State Return
If you need to file an Amended State Return, please select "Create Amended State Return". Select the three dots next to the State in which you would like to amend, and then "Edit Amended." Once inside your state return, scroll to the bottom and select the "Amended Return" listing. You must answer "YES" to the question asking "Do you want to Complete an Amended Return?" for your State. Then proceed with the return to make the changes. We will automatically carry over the original information from your accepted State return. Please verify this information with what was reported on your original return.
Make sure you've entered the explanation for the amended return in the Explanation Section If the state provides one. Otherwise, the explanation in the Amended Return Menu will be used.
Your state amended return forms will either have an "X" on them to indicte it is an amened return or it may actually say "Amended Return" on the document.
Enter Explanation
The IRS and states require an explanation for any changes being reflected on the amended return. Be sure to click this option and enter a short explanation for anything you have changed on your return.
Create a PDF of Amended Return
Once you have finished making changes, you can print your forms for your records or for mailing.
To print your amended return, go to: 2024 Amended Return >> Print Amended Return >> Print.
If mailing your amended return, please be sure to include the amended Form (1040X for the Federal) and the correct copy of any forms that were changed or affected. You will also need to include any supporting documentation. For example, if you amended your return because you received an additional W-2, please include a copy of the W-2 with your amended filing. When in doubt, you can always choose to submit the entire corrected return along with the amended form. Please be sure that you sign the amended return so as not to delay the processing procedure. You will mail the Federal and State Amended Returns separately.
The processing time for the Federal Amended Return is approximately 16 weeks from the time you mail the return. The state processing times vary from state to state. The state amended return can be found at the end of the printed documents.
E-file your Amended Return
Current IRS Regulations have recently been changed to allow for electronic filing of federal amended returns - not state. After making your amended return corrections and complete the steps above, ensure to review your printed copy. When you're ready to e-file your amended return, navigate to the "2024 Amended Return" tab with in the left menu. Select "Continue" and choose to "E-file my return online."
State amended returns cannot be e-filed. You must print and mail the state amended return to the state taxing agency.
Why does the refund I received not match my amended return?
- Verify the refund or amount due on the PDF of the amended return and are not referring to the refund calculator in the program.
- Verify the refund received or amount paid from the original return reported in the 'Original Federal Return Information' section of the amended return.
- Check the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool for information regarding any changes the IRS made.
- If the IRS made changes, you will receive a notice in the mail indicating why changes were made to the return.
