If you choose to file your tax return by mail—or if you are required to do so—you must send your return to the correct IRS processing center based on the form you are filing and the state in which you live.
How to Find the Correct Federal Mailing Address
- Visit the IRS “Where to File” page on the IRS website.
- Select your state from the list provided.
- Using the chart on the page, locate:
- The Form you are filing (for example, Form 1040), and
- The correct mailing address, which depends on whether:
- You are expecting a refund, or
- You are enclosing a payment with your return.
Important Note About State Tax Returns
If you are filing any state return(s) by mail, you must send each one separately to the appropriate state taxing authority.
- Do NOT mail your state return(s) together with your federal return.
- Do NOT mail state returns to the IRS processing center.
