If you previously received a qualified disaster-related retirement distribution and elected to spread the taxable income over three years, you may need to continue reporting a portion of that distribution on your current tax return using Form 8915-F. The IRS uses Form 8915-F to report qualified disaster distributions, related income, and eligible repayments.
Key Points
- Qualified disaster distributions may be included in income over three years unless you elected to include the entire amount in income in the year of distribution.
- Form 8915-E was used for coronavirus-related distributions and other qualified 2020 disaster distributions. For tax years after 2020, the IRS replaced Form 8915-E with Form 8915-F.
- Form 8915-F is used to:
- Report qualified disaster distributions,
- Report income from previously reported qualified disaster distributions, and
- Report eligible repayments of those distributions.
- If you are in the second or third year of a three-year income-spreading election, you may need to file Form 8915-F to report the remaining taxable portion of the distribution.
- If you repaid all or part of a qualified disaster distribution during the allowable repayment period, you may be able to reduce the taxable income reported on Form 8915-F.
Who Should Answer "Yes"?
Answer Yes if:
- You reported a qualified disaster distribution on a prior-year Form 8915-E or Form 8915-F, and you still have taxable income from that distribution to report this year.
- You repaid all or part of a previously reported qualified disaster distribution during the current tax year and need to report the repayment on Form 8915-F.
Who Should Answer "No"?
Answer No if:
- You previously reported a qualified disaster distribution, but all required income has already been reported and there are no repayments to report this year.
- You fully repaid the distribution and have no current-year reporting requirement related to that distribution.
- You have never reported a qualified disaster distribution on Form 8915-E or Form 8915-F.
Note: These rules apply only to qualified disaster-related distributions. Not all retirement plan or IRA distributions qualify for disaster relief treatment. See the IRS instructions for Form 8915-F for additional information.
