The CP14 notice is sent to taxpayers that owe money on unpaid taxes.
What do I need to do?
Read the notice and compare the amounts listed on the notice with your accepted return for the year indicated. This will show you where the IRS and the return differ. After reviewing the notice, review the accepted PDF to find the discrepancy. Generally, the discrepancy is in payments (estimated payments, amount paid with extension, amount paid with return).
How do I respond to the notice?
- If the notice is correct, you will simply agree with the notice and pay the amount due. You do not need to file an amended return.
- If you made a payment not listed on the notice, you will need to provide the IRS with proof of the payment. The notice contains a phone number and caller ID you can call and talk to an IRS representative. Have proof of your payment available when you call.
