If your return is being rejected for an incorrect EIN, log into the account and choose View Details on the My Account screen. An explanation is provided to you along with the last four digits of the EIN that is incorrect (under Additional Info).
Continue into the account by selecting Fix Return. Go to Federal > Income and choose the W-2 or 1099 that is incorrect. Edit the entry to compare what is on your paper forms to what has been entered in the program.
What if the entry is correct?
If the information on the paper forms matches the information in the program:
- Verify the EIN with the employer. If the employer changed the EIN during the year, they may need to update their W-2/1099 forms.
- Print and mail your return. If the IRS database does not recognize the EIN and the employer has verified the number is correct, the return cannot be e-filed until the employer and IRS resolve the issue. The return will need to be printed, signed and mailed to the IRS and/or state.
