When you start your South Carolina return, you'll see the Basic Information screen. This section collects information the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) needs to process your return and determine whether any additional forms or tax treatments apply.
Review each question carefully and update any information that doesn't apply to your situation.
What county should I select?
Choose the South Carolina county where you lived as of December 31 of the tax year.
If you moved during the year, select the county where you resided at the end of the year.
Are you filing a composite return on behalf of the nonresident partner/shareholder of a partnership or S corporation?
Most individual taxpayers should select No.
A composite return is a tax return filed by a South Carolina partnership or S corporation on behalf of certain nonresident owners. Instead of each eligible nonresident partner or shareholder filing a separate South Carolina return, the business reports and pays the South Carolina tax for those owners through a single composite filing.
You may answer Yes only if:
- You are filing a South Carolina return for a partnership or S corporation.
- The business is making a composite filing for eligible nonresident owners.
- You have documentation showing the entity elected or is required to file a composite return.
If you're filing your own individual South Carolina return and are unsure whether this applies, select No. If you received a South Carolina Schedule K-1 from a partnership or S corporation, contact the entity if you need confirmation about whether a composite return was filed on your behalf.
Have you filed a federal or state extension?
Select Yes if you requested an extension of time to file your federal return or a state tax return.
Select No if you did not request an extension.
Remember, an extension gives you more time to file, but it doesn't give you more time to pay any tax due.
Is the mailing address entered a new address?
Select Yes if your mailing address has changed since your last South Carolina tax return or if the address on your return is different from the address currently on file with the SCDOR.
Select No if your mailing address has not changed.
Did you serve in a combat zone during the tax year?
Choose Yes if you served in a designated combat zone during the tax year.
If you answer Yes, enter the name of the combat zone when prompted. This information may affect filing deadlines and other tax-related benefits available to military personnel.
Select No if you did not serve in a combat zone.
Would you like information about receiving your Form 1099-G or 1099-INT electronically?
South Carolina offers a paperless option for accessing certain tax documents online.
If you select Yes, enter a valid email address. The South Carolina Department of Revenue may use this information to provide instructions for accessing your:
- Form 1099-G (Certain Government Payments), or
- Form 1099-INT (Interest Income)
Selecting No means you do not wish to receive information about electronic access to these forms.
What does "Missing ISO Code" mean?
If you received an e-file error or block indicating a missing ISO code, the software needs additional information about your foreign address.
An ISO code is a standardized code used to identify foreign countries, states, provinces, or territories for electronic filing purposes.
To resolve this issue:
- Locate the field labeled "If you received an e-file block for a missing ISO Code, please select the foreign state or province for your foreign address."
- Use the dropdown menu to select the appropriate foreign state, province, territory, or region associated with your mailing address.
- Review your foreign address to make sure all address fields are completed correctly.
- Save your changes and continue through the return.
If your address is located in the United States, you generally do not need to make a selection in this field unless directed by an e-file error message.
Need More Help?
Before filing your South Carolina return, review all entries on the Basic Information screen to verify they are complete and accurate. Even small errors, such as an incorrect county selection or missing foreign address information, can delay processing or prevent your return from being electronically filed. You can access the South Carolina Instruction book here.
