The Mississippi Payments section is used to enter certain tax payments that may affect your refund or balance due.
Do not enter Mississippi withholding from W-2 or 1099 forms here. That information is generally transferred automatically from your federal return.
Estimated Payments and Amount Paid on Original Return
Enter:
- Mississippi estimated tax payments made during the year.
- Payments previously made with an original Mississippi return, if applicable.
Estimated tax payments are payments made directly to Mississippi during the year, often by taxpayers with self-employment income, investment income, or other income not fully covered by withholding.
You can find payment amounts in your payment records, bank statements, or Mississippi Department of Revenue payment confirmations.
Only enter payments that are not already included in your return.
Refund Received or Carried Forward From Original Return (Amended Returns Only)
If you are filing an amended Mississippi return, enter:
- Any refund you already received from the original return, or
- Any refund from the original return that was applied to another tax year.
This helps ensure your amended return is calculated correctly.
If you are filing your original return, leave this field blank.
Apply Your Refund to Next Year's Return
If your return shows a refund, you may choose to apply all or part of it to next year's Mississippi taxes instead of receiving the full refund now.
Enter the amount you want applied to next year's return.
Important:
- Complete and save your Mississippi return before entering this amount.
- The amount cannot exceed your available refund.
- If your return shows a balance due, this option will not apply.
Tips
- Do not enter the same payment more than once.
- Verify that your W-2 and 1099 withholding information was entered correctly in the federal section.
- Keep copies of payment confirmations and tax records for your files.
