Estimated Payment Vouchers (Form NC-40)
Use Form NC-40 if you expect to owe North Carolina tax next year and would like to make estimated tax payments.
Estimated payments are commonly used by taxpayers who:
• Are self-employed
• Receive income not subject to withholding
• Have significant investment income
• Expect to owe tax when filing their return
The information entered in this section can help generate North Carolina estimated payment vouchers for future tax payments.
Form NC-410 (Extension)
If you need to file an extension for your state return, you can complete Form NC-410 to do so.
An extension provides additional time to file your return, but it does not extend the time to pay taxes owed. Any tax due generally must be paid by the original filing deadline to avoid penalties and interest. Enter any extension-related
information exactly as reflected in your records.
Important: This form will not be submitted if you file your state return electronically. You will need to mail this form to the appropriate address listed on the form/instructions.
NC Schedule K-1 (Partnership/S Corporation/Estate)
If you received a North Carolina Schedule K-1 from a partnership, S corporation, estate, or trust, you can enter information from this form on your state return.
This section allows you to enter information reported on the Schedule K-1, including:
• Income or loss
• Additions and subtractions
• Tax credits
• North Carolina withholding
• Tax paid on your behalf
• Nonresident North Carolina income information
Enter the information exactly as shown on your Schedule K-1 and any supporting schedules provided by the issuing entity.
Important: Your North Carolina Schedule K-1 may contain information that differs from your federal Schedule K-1. Because North Carolina has its own tax rules and reporting requirements, items such as income, additions, deductions, credits, withholding, and taxes paid on your behalf may not match the amounts shown on your federal form. Be sure to enter the information from your North Carolina Schedule K-1 exactly as reported, even if it differs from your federal Schedule K-1.
Underpayment Penalty (Form D-422)
Use Underpayment Penalty, Form D-422 if you need to calculate or review a penalty for underpaying estimated North Carolina income tax during the year.
An underpayment penalty may apply when:
• Not enough tax was paid through withholding and estimated payments.
• Required estimated tax payments were not made on time.
• Estimated payments were less than the required amount. [kb.drakesoftware.com], [irs.gov]
If your filing situation requires Form D-422, the program will guide you through the information needed to calculate the penalty.
