Colorado allows taxpayers additional time to file their individual income tax return. If you expect to owe Colorado tax, you may need to submit a payment with your extension using Form DR 0158-I.
This form is used to report a payment made with a Colorado extension and helps ensure any tax due is paid by the original filing deadline.

When Should I Complete Form DR 0158-I?
Complete this form if:
- You need additional time to file your Colorado return; and
- You are making a payment with your Colorado extension.
If no payment is due, you generally do not need to complete this form.
The Following Information Will Be Needed
Amount of Payment Attached to the Extension
Enter the amount paid with the Colorado extension.
This should be the amount submitted to Colorado to cover any expected tax liability by the filing deadline.
How Does This Affect My Return?
The payment reported on Form DR 0158-I is treated as a Colorado tax payment and may:
- Reduce the amount of tax owed;
- Increase the refund amount; or
- Reduce penalties and interest that could apply to an unpaid balance.
Important Information About Extensions
An extension gives you additional time to file your Colorado return.
An extension does not give additional time to pay any tax due. If tax is owed, payment should generally be made by the original due date to avoid penalty and interest charges.
Can This Form Be E-Filed?
No.
If you complete Form DR 0158-I, the form is not submitted with an electronically filed Colorado return. The form must be printed and mailed to the appropriate address listed in the Colorado form instructions.
Notes
- Only enter payments actually made with a Colorado extension.
- Retain proof of payment with your tax records.
- Filing an extension does not extend the due date for payment of tax.
- Interest and penalties may apply to unpaid tax balances after the original due date.
