Most Kansas withholding information transfers automatically from your federal return. If you entered withholding on Forms W-2 or 1099, those amounts will generally flow to the Kansas return without any additional entry.
You can also use the Kansas Payments section to:
- Enter payments made with a Kansas extension.
- Report Kansas estimated tax payments.
- Apply all or part of your current-year refund to next year's Kansas return as an estimated tax payment.

Kansas Income Tax Withholding
Kansas withholding reported on Forms W-2 and 1099 is generally carried automatically from the federal return into the Kansas return.
Kansas Form K-40 Line 19 is used to report Kansas income tax withheld from W-2s and 1099s.
Estimated Tax Payments
If you made Kansas estimated tax payments during the year, enter them in the Payments section.
Kansas instructions provide that estimated tax payments include:
- Quarterly estimated payments made during the tax year.
- Any prior-year Kansas overpayment that was applied forward to the current tax year.
These payments are reported on Form K-40, Line 20.
Extension Payments
If you filed a Kansas extension and made a payment with that extension, be sure to enter the payment amount in the Payments section.
Kansas allows taxpayers who filed federal Form 4868 to receive an automatic Kansas filing extension, but any tax expected to be owed should be paid by the original due date to reduce interest and penalties.
Extension payments are reported on Form K-40, Line 21 (Amount paid with Kansas extension).
Why Is This Important?
Entering your extension payment ensures the payment is included when your Kansas tax liability is calculated. If the payment is omitted, your return may incorrectly show a balance due or a smaller refund.
Apply My Refund to Next Year's Return
If you're receiving a Kansas refund, you can choose to apply all or part of that refund to the following tax year's estimated taxes instead of receiving the money now.
Kansas instructions allow taxpayers to apply an overpayment to the next year's estimated income tax by entering the amount on Form K-40, Line 34 (Credit Forward).
How Does This Affect My Return?
The amount you choose to apply forward:
- Reduces the refund issued for the current year.
- Becomes an estimated tax payment for the next Kansas tax year.
How Does This Affect My Return?
Amounts entered in the Kansas Payments section may:
- Increase your total payments and credits.
- Reduce any balance due.
- Increase your refund.
- Allow a portion of your refund to be applied to next year's Kansas return.
