Kansas allows an additional personal exemption of $2,320 for qualifying disabled veterans when filing a Kansas Individual Income Tax Return (Form K-40). The Disabled Veteran Personal Exemption is an additional exemption allowance that may be claimed by eligible taxpayers in addition to the standard Kansas exemption.
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify for the Kansas Disabled Veterans Personal Exemption if:
- You were honorably discharged from active service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces; and
- You have been certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as receiving 100% disability compensation; and
- The disability is permanent; and
- The disability was sustained through military action or accident, or resulted from a disease contracted during active military service
How to Claim the Exemption
When preparing your Kansas Individual Income Tax Return:
- Basic Information
- Answer "Are you claiming the Disabled Veteran Personal Exemption Allowance? The exemption amount will automatically be entered on the Kansas return.
Note: Documentation may not be required with the return but should be retained in the event the Kansas Department of Revenue requests verification. Keeping supporting documentation with your tax records is recommended.
