The Payments section is used to review and enter certain Maryland tax payments and credits that may affect your refund or balance due. Most withholding information is automatically transferred from your Federal return, but additional entries may be required for extension payments, pass-through entity taxes, and nonresident withholding.

State Withholding and Payments
Most Maryland withholding and payment information is automatically transferred from the Federal return.
Before filing, verify that:
- All Forms W-2 have been entered correctly.
- All Forms 1099 containing Maryland withholding have been entered.
- State withholding amounts match the amounts reported on your tax documents.
⚠️ The Maryland refund amount will not display until the return has been completed and the state return has been saved.
Apply Your Refund to Next Year's Return
If your Maryland return results in a refund, you may choose to apply all or part of that refund to next year's Maryland tax return.
Enter the Amount of State Refund You Would Like to Apply to Next Year
Enter the amount of your Maryland refund that should be credited toward next year's taxes.
⚠️ If the amount entered exceeds the available refund or the return shows a balance due, the amount will not be applied to the following year's return.
Amount Paid with Extension
If you submitted a payment with a Maryland extension request, enter the amount paid.
Extension payments:
- Reduce the balance due on the return.
- May increase the refund if the extension payment exceeds the final tax liability.
💡 A filing extension provides additional time to file the return, but it does not extend the time to pay taxes owed.

Only enter the withholding amount reported on the form.

The Maryland Comptroller may require supporting documentation for certain payments and credits.
⚠️ The preparer or taxpayer may need to attach a PDF or forward the signature document and requested certification forms.
