What Information Transfers Automatically?
Most Georgia withholding reported on Forms W-2, 1099, and other federal income documents transfers automatically to the Georgia return.
Before filing, review your forms to verify that:
- Georgia withholding was entered correctly.
- The correct state is listed on each form.
- All withholding amounts appear on the return.
Most taxpayers will not need to manually enter withholding already reported on their federal return.
Apply Your Refund to Next Year's Return
If your Georgia return results in a refund, you can choose to apply all or part of that refund to next year's Georgia tax return.
Enter the amount you want applied to next year's taxes after completing the return and reviewing the final refund amount.
Important:
- The amount applied cannot exceed your available refund.
- If the return shows a balance due, no amount can be carried forward.
Applying a refund to next year's return can help cover future tax liability or estimated tax payments.
Extension Payment
Use this section to enter any payment made with a Georgia extension request.
Only enter amounts that were actually paid with the extension.
Extension payments are applied toward your Georgia tax liability and may reduce the amount owed or increase your refund.
Important: An extension of time to file does not extend the time to pay tax.
Other Georgia Income Tax Withheld
Use this section to enter Georgia withholding reported on:
- Form G2-A
- Form G2-FL
- Form G2-LP
- Form G-2RP
These withholding amounts generally do not transfer automatically from the federal return and must be entered separately when applicable.
This commonly applies to withholding from partnerships, fiduciaries, pass-through entities, retirement income, or other special Georgia reporting situations.
