If you need to make a change to an already accepted New Mexico state return, you must file an amended return.
How do I generate an amended return for New Mexico?
To generate your amended state return, please follow the steps below.
- Select 20XX Amended Return from the navigation bar
- Pay for your amended return
- Read the "Filing an Amended Return" page, then press continue
- Select Amend State Return(s)
- Use the three dots to select "Amend State" from within the white box
- Scroll to the bottom of your state return menu and select Amended Return - Begin
- Check the Yes box to generate your amended New Mexico state return, then select "Complete Amended Return."
- Fill out the rest of the sections using the information from your accepted New Mexico return. If you do not have an amount to enter for a box, leave it blank.
Once you've completed the New Mexico amended return, exit the state return to paper file it.
What if I received a refund from my original New Mexico return?
When you complete the "Complete Amended Return" sections, you enter the information from your accepted return. The amended return will include your original refund amount in the calculations as long as you accurately report the information from your accepted return.
What if I originally owed state taxes?
If you made a tax payment after your original state return was accepted, you must report it on your amended return, so the amount is included in your calculations. To do so, follow the pathway above to navigate to the Amended Return section of your state return. Next, select “Complete Amended Return” and enter your payment amount as "Other Payments" under the Payments section.
How do I file my amended New Mexico return?
Amended state returns must be paper filed. To print your amended return, select "Review > Summary" from the menu on the left, followed by “Print Return” once you are on the Tax Return Summary. Selecting “Print Return” generates a PDF containing your amended state return. Simply print, sign, and mail your amended New Mexico return to paper file it.
Only the amended return (not the originally filed return) and copies of supporting documents (W-2’s, 1099’s, etc.) that support the reason for the change to the tax return need to be mailed unless the state or IRS specifically ask for other documents. View and compare your original and amended return documents to see the changes.
The state amended return mailing address can be found on the printed form and state department of revenue website. The address to mail the return may differ if you are receiving a refund or making a payment with your return.
Additional Information
When you file an amended return, you must provide an explanation regarding what you have changed. Please make sure to provide your explanation when completing your amended return(s) within the state amended menu.
