If you need to correct information on a New Mexico return that has already been accepted, you'll need to file an amended return.
How to Create an Amended New Mexico Return in the Program
Follow these steps to generate your amended New Mexico return:
- Select 20XX Amended Return from the navigation menu.
- Pay for the amended return.
- Review the Filing an Amended Return page and select Continue.
- Choose Amend State Return(s).
- Use the three-dot menu inside the white box and select Amend State.
- Scroll to the bottom of the New Mexico state menu and select Amended Return – Begin.
- Check Yes to generate the New Mexico amended return, then select Complete Amended Return.
- Complete the amended return screens using the information from your originally accepted New Mexico return. If a field does not apply, leave it blank.
- Be sure to provide an explanation describing what changed on the return.
What If I Received a Refund on My Original Return?
When completing the amended return interview, enter the information exactly as it appeared on your accepted New Mexico return.
As long as the original information is entered correctly, the amended return will automatically account for any refund you previously received when calculating the amended balance due or refund.
What If I Originally Owed New Mexico Taxes?
If you made a payment after your original return was accepted, you must include that payment on the amended return.
To do this:
- Navigate to the Amended Return section.
- Select Complete Amended Return.
- Enter the payment amount in the Other Payments section under Payments.
This helps ensure the amended return calculations properly account for taxes already paid.
How Do I File My Amended New Mexico Return?
Amended New Mexico returns must be paper filed.
After completing the amended return:
- Select Review > Summary from the left menu.
- Open the Tax Return Summary page.
- Select Print Return.
- Print the PDF of the amended return.
- Sign and date the return.
- Mail the amended return to the address listed on the printed form.
The mailing address may be different depending on whether:
- You are requesting a refund, or
- You are sending a payment with the amended return.
What Should Be Mailed?
Generally, mail only:
- The amended New Mexico return
- Copies of supporting documents related to the change (W-2s, 1099s, etc.)
Do not mail a copy of the originally filed return unless the state specifically requests it.
It's a good idea to compare your original and amended returns before mailing so you can clearly identify the changes made.
Additional Information
New Mexico requires an explanation of the changes being made to the return. When completing the amended return section in the software, provide a clear reason for the amendment, such as:
- Corrected W-2 received after filing
- Additional income reported
- Federal return changes
- Corrected withholding information
If your amendment is the result of a federal change, New Mexico generally requires you to file the amended state return after the federal change becomes final.
