If you're uploading a CSV file for your Form 1099-B transactions, you may receive one or more error messages. These messages help identify problems with the file so you can make corrections before importing it again.
Owner Errors
Owner must be 'T', 'S', or 'J'
The owner field must contain one of the following values:
- T = Taxpayer
- S = Spouse
- J = Joint
Update the owner value in your CSV file to match one of these accepted entries.
Owner must be 'T' if not filing jointly
If you're not filing a joint tax return, the owner field must be T for taxpayer.
Sales Price and Cost Errors
SalesPrice must be greater than or equal to $0
The sales price cannot be a negative number. Enter a value of $0 or greater.
Cost must be greater than or equal to $0
The cost basis cannot be a negative number. Enter a value of $0 or greater.
Date Acquired Errors
DtAcquired is an invalid date format
The acquisition date isn't formatted correctly. Review the date format used in the CSV template and update the entry.
DtAcquired is an invalid date
The acquisition date entered isn't a valid calendar date.
DtAcquired cannot be a future date
The acquisition date must be a current or past date.
Date Sold Errors
DtSold is an invalid date format
The sale date isn't formatted correctly. Update the date to match the required format.
DtSold is an invalid date
The sale date entered isn't a valid calendar date.
DtSold cannot be a future date
The sale date must be a current or past date.
DtSold must not be before or the same as date acquired
The sale date must be later than the acquisition date.
DtSold must not be greater than the tax year
The sale date must fall within the tax year being reported.
Description Error
Description must be between 3 and 30 characters
The transaction description must contain at least 3 characters but no more than 30 characters.
Import Status Messages
XX rows imported successfully
The stated number of rows were imported successfully.
XX rows unable to import
The stated number of rows could not be imported due to one or more errors.
Error importing row XX
A specific row contains an error that prevented it from importing.
Error parsing row XX
A specific row contains data that could not be read or processed.
Error parsing CSV document - no rows imported
The system could not read the CSV file because of a formatting issue. Verify that the file matches the required template and save it as a CSV file before uploading again.

Column Name Errors
If you receive an error related to column names, review the headers in your CSV file carefully. The column names must exactly match the CSV template provided.
Common causes include:
- Missing required column headers
- Misspelled column names
- Extra spaces in header names
- Incorrect column order
- Using a custom CSV format instead of the provided template
If you're seeing a column name error, edit the CSV file so the headers match the template exactly, save the changes, and upload the file again.
