If you have a large number of investment or cryptocurrency transactions, uploading a CSV file can save you a lot of time. TaxSlayer lets you import eligible 1099-B and 1099-DA transaction data using a CSV file instead of entering each sale manually.
This feature is available with the Classic, Premium, and Self-Employed packages. It is not available in the Free Edition.
Before you begin, make sure your broker or crypto platform provides the information needed to complete the CSV template.
Step 1: Go to the Investments Section
From your return:
- Select Federal
- Select Income
- Choose Select My Forms
- Select Investments
- Click Stocks, Mutual Funds, Cryptocurrency, Collectibles, etc.
This is where you'll enter or import capital gain and loss transactions reported on Forms 1099-B and 1099-DA.
Step 2: Download the CSV Template
- Select Upload a CSV of Sales.
- Click Download Template at the bottom of the screen.
- A spreadsheet template will open.
- Delete any rows you won't use. For example, if you're filing as Single, you can remove rows intended for a spouse or joint transactions.
Don't See the Download Template Link?
If you've already entered transactions manually or uploaded another file, select + Add a Capital Gains Transaction. The download link should then become available.
Step 3: Enter Your Transaction Information
Copy the required information from your brokerage statement, crypto platform report, or spreadsheet into the downloaded template.
Only the fields included in the TaxSlayer template can be imported. Remove any extra columns or data before uploading the file.
The CSV template supports the following information:
- Owner
- T = Taxpayer
- S = Spouse
- J = Joint
- Description
- Must be 3 to 30 characters long
- Special characters are not allowed
- Date Acquired
- Format: MM/DD/YYYY
- Date Sold
- Format: MM/DD/YYYY
- Sales Price
- Enter numbers only
- Do not use commas or decimal points
- Cost Basis
- Enter numbers only
- Do not use commas or decimal points
Be sure your CSV file matches the template format exactly. Incorrect formatting can cause the upload to fail.
Step 4: Upload Your Completed CSV File
After entering your transaction data:
- Select Upload Completed CSV.
- Drag and drop the CSV file into the upload window, or browse your computer to select the file.
- Click Upload.
If the system finds formatting or data errors, you'll receive a message identifying the row that needs to be corrected.
Important Things to Know
- You can upload multiple CSV files if needed.
- Uploading the same file more than once will create duplicate transactions. Existing transactions are not overwritten.
- Transactions that require information not included in the CSV template must be entered manually.
- Blank required fields may prevent a transaction from importing successfully.
- The Delete All option removes all imported and manually entered transactions so you can start over.
- Each CSV upload is limited to 500 transactions per file.
Tips for a Smoother Upload
- Review your CSV file before uploading to confirm dates, descriptions, and ownership codes are correct.
- Save the spreadsheet as a CSV (.csv) file before uploading.
- If you're importing cryptocurrency transactions reported on Form 1099-DA, make sure the transaction details in your CSV match the information reported by the digital asset platform.
- Large transaction histories may need to be split into multiple files if they exceed the 500-transaction limit.
Need to Report More Complex Transactions?
The CSV import tool only supports the fields included in the TaxSlayer template. If a sale requires additional reporting information, adjustments, or special tax treatment, you'll need to enter that transaction manually within the Investments section of your return.
