When you receive a rejection code from the IRS for duplicate filing, the IRS is indicating they already have an accepted tax return for the current year with your social security number.
How to verify the social security number listed on the account?
To make certain that you entered your social security number correctly, log in to your account and go to the basic information section. Then go into the personal information section and verify that you have entered in all the social security numbers correctly into the system.
If you did incorrectly input your social security number, you will need to correct it and then re-submit your return through the e-file process.
What if I have not filed a return for the current year?
If you verified your social security number is correct within the account and you are sure you did not file a federal return this year, you should contact the IRS immediately at 800-829-1040, as an income tax return has been filed using your social security number. The IRS also has an identity theft phone number which is 1-800-908-4490. Additionally, if you think you may be a victim of identity theft then you may want to contact your local authorities as well.
The IRS will require that you print your return to paper file for this year as you will continue to be rejected via e-file. The IRS may also require you to complete Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, and attach to your printed return.
You can view/print your return from within your account by logging into your account and selecting the “Summary/Print” tab from the navigation bar. Next, select "View Return" to view, print or save a PDF copy of your return. If you do not see an option for "View Return", select the "Show Details" dropdown. To view, print or save your PDF, you must first pay your filing fees. You can do this by selecting the "Pay Now" option. Be sure to sign your return and mail to the appropriate IRS mailing address.
