Within the e-file section, you may be asked to provide your ID or driver's license information (for each spouse)when completing the e-file process. There are two reasons for the request:
1. State return filing
You may be asked to enter your driver's license information in the e-file process. This is not a requirement (except in some states like NY).
Do I have to provide my ID to e-file my state return?
No, you can check the box at the top of the screen: 'I do not wish to provide'. If filing married filing joint, each spouse will need to check the box.
If the option to choose "I do not wish to provide" is not available, your state requires you to provide your ID information or check the box indicating the taxpayer does not have identification.
2. Using File N Go option
Generally, if you choose to use the File N Go option, you will be asked to provide your driver's license information to prove or verify your identity to the third-party bank that will receive your refund and deduct our fees. File & Go is offered to TaxSlayer customers only.
Do I have to provide my ID to use the File N Go option?
Yes, the third party bank that will process your refund and deduct the tax program fees requires you to enter a valid ID to prove your identity.
What forms of ID are acceptable?
You can use any of the following forms of ID:
- Driver's License
- DMV/BMV State ID
- Military ID
- US Passport
If you check the box indicating the ID was not issued by the US, you have these additional options:
- Foreign Driver's License
- Matricula Consular Card
- Foreign Passport
Who is the Issuer of the ID?
If you are unsure of who the issuer of the ID is:
- Driver's license is issued by the state on the license
- DMV/BMV State ID is issued by the state
- Military ID is typically issued by the Department of Defense. Choose AA, AE or AP as the issuer.
- US Passports are issued by U.S. Department of State. When you choose US Passport, you are prompted to enter the passport number rather than the issuer.
- For Foreign Driver's License, Matricula Consular Card, and Foreign Passport, enter the issuer (free text)
If you get a message indicating the 'Taxpayer/Spouse issuer is required', this field may be incomplete or invalid.
What if my ID is expired or I don't have any of the listed forms of ID?
You will not be able to use the File N Go option if you do not have any of the valid forms of ID listed. Start the e-file process over and pay the fees by debit, credit or prepaid card instead. An expired ID is not considered valid and cannot be used. You will need to obtain a valid ID to use the File N Go service.
