We do not provide the W-2 template within the PDF copy of the return.
Why Isn't My W-2 Included in My Tax Return PDF?
The W-2 information shown in your tax return is based on the amounts you entered into the software. Because it is not the actual form issued by your employer, it is not considered an official W-2.
For that reason, we do not include a W-2 template or replica in the PDF copy of your return. Most agencies, lenders, and employers that request proof of income require an official W-2 issued by your employer.
How Can I Get a Copy of My W-2?
- Contact your employer. Your employer may be able to provide a replacement copy of the W-2 they originally issued.
- Request a copy from the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA can provide copies of W-2 forms for a fee. Visit the Social Security Administration website for current fees, eligibility requirements, and instructions.
-
Contact the IRS if you never received your W-2. Employers are generally required to provide W-2 forms by January 31. If you haven't received yours after that date, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Be prepared to provide:
- Your employer's name, address, and phone number
- Your dates of employment
- An estimate of your wages and federal income tax withheld
What If My Employer Went Out of Business?
If your employer is no longer in business and you still haven't received your W-2 by mid-February, visit the IRS website for guidance with missing Forms W-2.
The IRS provides instructions for obtaining wage information and filing your return when an employer cannot provide the form.
Can I File a Tax Return Without a W-2?
If you can't get your W-2 in time to file, you may still be able to submit your tax return using Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2.
To complete Form 4852, you'll need to estimate your wages and tax withholding using your final pay stub for the year or other payroll records. Be sure to enter the most accurate information available.
