The taxpayer/spouse either did not enter an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) or entered an invalid or incorrect one.
An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number used to prevent someone else from filing a tax return in your name using your Social Security number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS. If an IP PIN has been issued to an individual, it must be included on the return.
When do I receive my IP PIN?
The IRS issues a new IP PIN each year and mails it to all taxpayers who are required to file with an IP PIN between November and January. You will receive a new number each year. Do not use a number from a prior year; the return will be rejected.
How do I fix my return?
The IRS requires you to enter the 6-digit IP PIN that was previously assigned to you.
- Federal Section
- Miscellaneous Forms
- IRS Identification Pin
- Enter the 6-digit IP PIN the IRS assigned to you and anyone else listed on the return.
- Resubmit your return by completing the e-file process
