If you need a Federal Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) but your return used the standard deduction, you can still generate the form within the software.
This is often required when a state return allows or requires itemized deductions even though your federal return used the standard deduction.
How to Generate Federal Schedule A
To force Schedule A to generate, follow these steps:
- Go to Federal.
- Select Deductions.
- Choose Select my forms.
- Open Itemized Deductions.
- Select Choose to Itemize or Take the Standard Deduction.
- Choose Force to Use Itemized Deduction.
Once selected, the software will generate Schedule A based on the itemized deduction information you've entered.
Why Would I Need Schedule A If It Wasn't Filed With My Federal Return?
Some states allow taxpayers to itemize deductions on their state return even when the federal return uses the standard deduction.
In these situations, the state may require a copy of Federal Schedule A to verify the itemized deductions used on the state return.
Because the IRS only receives Schedule A when itemized deductions are claimed on the federal return, you'll need to generate the form separately if your federal return uses the standard deduction.
Will Forcing Schedule A Change My Federal Return?
It can.
Forcing the software to use itemized deductions may change your federal tax calculation if your itemized deductions are lower than your standard deduction. Before filing, review your return carefully to make sure you're using the deduction method that provides the greatest tax benefit.
If your goal is simply to obtain a copy of Schedule A for state filing purposes, you may need to generate the form and then confirm that the correct deduction method is used before submitting your return.
When Is This Most Common?
You may need a federal Schedule A even when you don't itemize federally if:
- Your state allows itemized deductions independent of your federal return.
- Your state requires a copy of Schedule A to support deductions claimed on the state return.
- You're requested to provide Schedule A during a state review or verification process.
