If you've already e-filed your federal amended return (Form 1040-X), you're almost done. Here’s what to expect next, how to amend your state return, and how to track your refund or pay any balance due.
How Do I E-File My State Amended Return?
At this time, state amended returns cannot be e-filed through our software.
To amend your state return, you'll need to:
- Print your completed state amended return.
- Sign the return where required.
- Mail it to your state tax agency along with any supporting documents.
Supporting documents may include:
- Copies of any new tax forms that caused the amendment, such as an additional W-2 or 1099.
- A copy of your federal amended return (Form 1040-X).
- The complete state amended return package.
Because each state has its own mailing requirements, be sure to review your state's instructions before sending your return.
How Do I Check the Status of My Amended Return?
- Check the status of your amended return to be sure it was accepted. You can do that by logging into your account and viewing the My Account screen for the accepted status.
- You can check the progress of your federal amended return on the IRS website 3 weeks after filing it. Visit the IRS website at Where's My Amended Return?
How Will I Receive My Amended Return Refund?
If your amended return results in a refund, the IRS may issue it by:
- Direct deposit (if selected and available), or
- Paper check mailed to your address on file.
If you're expecting a mailed refund check, make sure your mailing address is current in the Basic Information section of your account before filing.
How Do I Pay an Amount Due on an Amended Return?
If your amended return shows a balance due, you can pay by:
- Direct debit (if selected during filing), or
- Mailing a check or money order to the IRS.
When mailing a payment for an electronically filed amended return, include Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher. A copy of the voucher is included with your printable return package and can be accessed from the Summary/Print screen.
The Form 1040-V instructions include the mailing address you should use when sending your payment.
How Long Does It Take the IRS to Process an Amended Return?
Amended returns typically take longer to process than original tax returns.
In most cases, the IRS states that processing a federal amended return can take about 16 weeks after it is received, although actual processing times may vary depending on return complexity, IRS workload, and whether additional review is required.
Checking the status periodically through the IRS tracking tool is the best way to stay informed about your amended return's progress.
