An amended return is a corrected version of a previously filed tax return. Taxpayers file an amended return when they need to fix errors or update information that affects their tax liability, such as income, deductions, credits, or filing status. Federal amended returns are filed using Form 1040-X.
🧾 When to File an Amended Return
You should file an amended return if:
- You forgot to report income
- You claimed the wrong filing status
- You missed a deduction or credit (like the Adoption Credit!)
- You received corrected tax documents (e.g., W-2 or 1099)
- The IRS or state tax agency requests a correction
- You received additional documents after your return was e-filed and accepted
📄 How to File
- Use IRS Form 1040-X to amend a federal return
- Include any corrected forms or schedules (e.g., W-2, 1098-T, Schedule A)
- You cannot e-file older amended returns—some must be mailed
- State returns may require a separate amended form and need to be printed and mailed
⏱️ Timing
- You generally have 3 years from the original filing date or 2 years from the date you paid the tax (whichever is later)
- It is recommended to wait until after your original return is processed before filing an amended return.
- Processing can take up to 20 weeks, so be patient!
🗑️ Deleting an Amended Return (If Started in Error)
If an amended return was started by mistake and has not been filed or mailed, follow this process:
✅ What to Do
- 📞 Reach Out to Support
- Contact support to request removal or guidance on deleting the amended return from the system
- 🖨️ If Paper Forms Were Generated
- ❌ Print and discard the Form 1040‑X (Amended Return) portion to prevent accidental payment submission
- 🚫 Do not mail any amended return documents
⚠️ Important Notes
- 🔒 Once an amended return has been mailed or e‑filed, it cannot be deleted
- 🔁 If changes are still needed after filing, the only option is to file another amendment
🛠️ Example:
You filed your 2024 return and forgot to claim the Child Tax Credit.
You can file Form 1040-X to add the credit and potentially receive a refund.
