Starting with tax year 2024, Minnesota changed how renters claim their credit.
👉 Renters must now use Schedule M1RENT to claim the Renter’s Credit on Form M1 (Minnesota Individual Income Tax Return). This replaces the previous process of filing Form M1PR for renters.
✅ What Is the MN Renter’s Credit?
The Renter’s Credit is a refundable credit based on:
- Rent paid during the year
- Household income

- Claimed on Form M1 using Schedule M1RENT
- Included in your Minnesota income tax refund
- No separate refund is issued
âś… Who Qualifies?
To qualify, you must:
- Be a full-year or part-year Minnesota resident
- Have paid rent on property subject to property tax (or payments in lieu of tax)
- Not be claimed as a dependent
- Have household income generally below ~$77,570
đź§ľ Required Documentation (CRP)
You must have a Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP):
- Provided by your landlord by January 31
- Shows total rent paid for the year
- Required to complete Schedule M1RENT
If You Don’t Receive a CRP:
- Contact your landlord
- If unresolved, contact the MN Department of Revenue
- You may need a Rent Paid Affidavit (RPA)

To claim the Renter’s Credit:
- Go to State Section
- Select Minnesota Return (M1)
- Go to Credits
- Choose Renter’s Credit (Schedule M1RENT)

- The credit is refundable
- It is combined with your MN income tax refund
- It is not issued separately like prior years

Assisted Living / Nursing Homes
- May still qualify if:
- You paid rent with your own funds
- You received a CRP household income
