If you need to remove a state tax return before it has been filed, follow these steps:
- Access your return and navigate to the left-hand menu.
- Select State.
- Click the three dots next to the state you wish to remove.
- Choose Delete.
Note: If you delete a state return and later decide to file it, you’ll need to manually add it back to your return. Standard fees will apply when you choose to print or e-file the state return.
This process ensures you maintain control over which state returns are included in your filing, while keeping your tax documents organized and accurate.
After E-Filing: What You Need to Know About State Returns
Once a state tax return has been e-filed, it cannot be deleted. This is because the return has already been submitted to the state tax authority and is considered part of your official filing record.
However, if you need to amend your state return—for example, to update your residency status—we’re here to help. Please contact us directly, and we’ll assist you in removing the current state return so you can re-add it with the correct filing status.
