Yes, you can amend a tax return with TaxSlayer even if your original return was prepared and filed using a different tax software provider or by a tax professional. To do this, you'll first recreate the return as it should have been filed, then use TaxSlayer's amended return feature to generate the necessary federal and state amendment forms.
1. Create or Log In to Your TaxSlayer Account
If you don't already have a TaxSlayer account, create one first. If you already have an account, sign in and navigate to your Tax Home page.
2. Start a New Return for the Year You Want to Amend
From your account dashboard:
- Select Start a New Tax Return for the year you need to amend.
- Pay the applicable original return preparation fee for that tax year. This fee includes both federal and state return preparation.
- Complete the return as it should have been filed originally, using the correct information.
If you're unsure where to enter changes, the Guide Me Wizard can help walk you through the process step by step.
3. Create the Amended Return
After completing the corrected version of your return:
- Select 20XX Amended Return from the left-side menu.
- Pay the nonrefundable amended return fee. This fee covers both federal and state amended returns.
- Continue to the Amended Tax Return Main Menu.
4. Complete the Federal Amended Return
Before making changes, you'll need to enter information from the return that was originally filed.
- Open Original Federal Return Information and verify your original refund amount or tax payment.
- Select Make Corrections for Amended Return and update the information that needs to be changed.
- Review all entries carefully to ensure the amendment accurately reflects your corrected tax situation.
5. Complete the State Amended Return
If your state return also needs to be corrected:
- From the 20XX Amended Return menu, select Amend State Return(s).
- Choose Amend State for the applicable state return.
- Scroll to the bottom of your state return menu and complete the Amended Return section.
TaxSlayer will generate the required state amendment forms based on the changes you've made.
6. Review and Print Your Amended Return
Before submitting your amendment:
- Review each section of the return for accuracy.
- Return to the Summary page using the left-side menu.
- Print copies of your federal and state amended returns.
Taking a few extra minutes to review your entries can help prevent delays in processing.
7. Mail Your Amended Return
Some amended returns may need to be mailed, especially for prior tax years.
- Use the appropriate IRS mailing address for your federal amended return.
- Use the mailing address listed on your state amended return for any state filings.
- Sign and date all required forms before mailing them.
An unsigned amended return can delay processing, so be sure all required signatures are included before sending your documents.
