The Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a unique number issued by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue to help prevent unauthorized filing of state tax returns and Homestead credit claims. It is optional but recommended for added security and is different from the IRS IP PIN. If requested, it must be included on your Wisconsin return, or your filing may be rejected or delayed. The PIN is valid only for the calendar year it is issued and cannot be used for tax years before 2021. Dependents not filing their own return cannot receive a PIN.
You can request, cancel, or retrieve your PIN through the My Tax Account (MTA) portal. A new PIN is issued each year and expires on December 31. For help, contact the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
The Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN is a number issued by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for you to use on your Wisconsin state tax return and Homestead credit claims. This personal identification number is used to prevent unauthorized individuals from filing a WI state return using your information.
Note: The Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN is not the same as the IRS Identity Protection PIN. Your state-issued IP PIN cannot be used on your federal return.
Do I need a Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN?
Using a Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN is optional, but it adds an extra layer of security to your state tax return. You and your spouse can request one if you've filed a Wisconsin return or homestead credit claim within the past three years..
If you requested a Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN, you must include it on your Wisconsin individual income tax return. Failure to do so may result in your return being rejected or your refund being delayed.
How the Wisconsin IP PIN Works
Your Wisconsin Identity Protection PIN is specific to the calendar year in which it is issued.
It must be used on any Wisconsin individual income tax returns or homestead credit claims for tax years 2021 and later that are filed during that calendar year.
Example:
If you request a PIN in 2025 and file returns for 2024, 2022, and 2020 during that year, use the PIN only on the 2024 and 2022 returns. Do not use it on the 2020 return.
