đď¸ Signing Your Federal Return When E-Filing
To electronically sign your federal tax return, you must provide one of the following during the e-file process:
- Your prior year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), or
- Your Self-Select PIN from the prior year
đNote: You will only have a Self-Select PIN if you electronically filed your prior year return. If you paper filed last year, you did not create a Self-Select PIN.
đ Where to Find Your Prior Year PIN
If you electronically filed your prior year return:
- Look for IRS Form 8879 â IRS E-file Signature Authorization in your prior year PDF.
- This form includes the Self-Select PIN that you or your tax preparer created last year.
Where do I enter the Prior Year PIN in my account?
â First Time Filing â Step-by-Step Instructions
- Log in to your account.
- Click Continue to proceed.
- From the left-hand menu, select E-file.
- Choose "Yes, I'm done with my return(s) and ready to file!" and click Continue.
- Proceed through the e-file steps until you reach the Finish & File section.
- Click "Sign and File My Return".
- Enter or update your banking information, if needed.
- Continue to the screen that asks:
"We need the adjusted gross income (AGI) from your 2023 return. Do you have access to it?" - Answer the AGI/PIN questions:
- If you electronically filed in 2023 before October 15th and have a copy of your return, select:
"Yes, I electronically filed my 2023 return before October 15th and have a copy."
â Enter your 2023 AGI. - If you donât have your return but remember your PIN, select:
"I cannot locate my 2023 return, but I electronically filed before October 15th and have my 5-digit self-select PIN."
â Enter your PIN.
- If you electronically filed in 2023 before October 15th and have a copy of your return, select:
- When prompted to select a form, choose Form 1040 (or the form you filed last year).
- If asked, answer the question about your filing status for 2023.
- On the "Enter your 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)" screen, input your AGI.
- Continue through the remaining e-file questions.
- Create a 5-digit Self-Select PIN to use for next yearâs return.
- Finally, click File & Pay to submit your return for processing.
đ Rejected Return â How to Correct AGI or PIN and Refile
If you return was previously rejected for the AGI or PIN and you need to correct it and file again, follow these instructions:
- Click "Fix Return" twice to begin the correction process.
- From the left-hand menu, select E-File.
- Choose "Yes, I'm done with my return(s) and ready to file!" and click Continue.
- Proceed through any additional offers or services:
- You may need to select "No Thanks" or review optional services before continuing.
- When you reach the "Let's get a few more details" screen:
- Under Products and Services, review your fees (click the arrow to expand the list).
- Click Continue.
- In the Finish & File section:
- If available, click Edit to update your filing details.
- If not, select "Sign and File My Return" or "File & Pay".
- Continue past:
- Banking information
- ID verification
- Terms and conditions
- Stop at the screen that says:
"We need the adjusted gross income (AGI) from your prior year return." - Continue through the remaining e-file questions.
- Create a 5-digit Self-Select PIN to use for next yearâs return.
- Finally, click File & Pay to submit your return for processing.
đ Important Notes for AGI/PIN Correction
- If you do not select âYes, I have my 2023 return with me,â you wonât be prompted to change the AGI.
- If you donât have your AGI but electronically filed last year, do the following:
- Change your answer to: "No, I can't locate my 2023 tax return."
- Enter your 5-digit Self-Select PIN from last year.
- If your 2023 return was not electronically accepted, select:
"No, I did not electronically file a 2023 return before October 15th."

- If you canât find your AGI or PIN, you can:
- Retrieve your 2023 tax return transcript from the IRS Get Transcript tool.
- Refer to your prior year PDF.
- If your return is rejected due to AGI or PIN mismatch, you can:
- Re-enter the correct AGI or PIN and resubmit the return.
- Use the Self-Select PIN option if you no longer have access to your AGI.
- For first-time filers or those who didnât file last year:
- Enter â0â for your AGI when prompted during the e-file process.
