If you need to make changes to a Kansas return that has already been accepted, you'll need to file an amended Kansas return. Whether you're correcting income, deductions, credits, or updating information after a change to your federal return, our software can help you prepare the amendment.
Kansas requires taxpayers to paper file amended individual income tax returns. The Kansas Department of Revenue also requires an explanation of the changes made to the return.

How Do I File an Amended Kansas Return?
Kansas amended individual income tax returns must be filed by mail.
To print your amended return:
- Select Summary/Print from the navigation menu.
- Choose View Return from the Tax Return Summary page.
- Review your PDF.
- Print, sign, and mail the amended return to the appropriate Kansas mailing address.
Only mail:
- The amended Kansas return
- Copies of supporting documents that explain the change (such as W-2s, 1099s, or other relevant records)
You generally do not need to mail a copy of the originally filed return unless the IRS or Kansas specifically requests it. Comparing your original and amended PDFs can help you verify the changes before mailing.
The correct mailing address will appear on the printed amended return and may vary depending on whether you're requesting a refund or submitting a payment.
Important Information About Kansas Amended Returns
When filing an amended Kansas return:
- You must provide an explanation of the changes made to the return.
- If your federal return was amended using Form 1040-X, Kansas requires a copy of the federal amendment and an explanation of the changes.
- If Schedule S was included with your original Kansas return, it must also be included with the amended return, even if no changes were made to that schedule.
- If the amendment results in a refund, Kansas generally requires the amended return to be filed within three years of the original filing date (including extensions) or within two years of the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.
