If you need to make changes to a Massachusetts return that has already been accepted, you'll need to file an amended Massachusetts return.
Common reasons to amend a return include:
- Correcting income, deductions, or credits
- Adding or removing tax documents
- Updating withholding amounts
- Claiming a missed refund or credit
- Correcting information after a federal amendment
- Disputing a Massachusetts health care penalty

- Complete any applicable sections and make the necessary corrections.
What If You Received a Refund on Your Original Return?
If you already received a refund from Massachusetts, you must report that refund on the amended return so the program can correctly calculate the amended result.
In the Amended Return section, enter the amount of the original refund in the field labeled: Overpayment from Original Return
What If You Originally Owed Massachusetts Tax?
If you paid Massachusetts tax with your original return, you must report that payment on the amended return.
In the Amended Return section, enter the amount paid in the field labeled: Payments Made With Original Return
Including the payment made with the original return helps ensure the amended return accurately calculates any additional tax due or refund.
