If you need to make a change to an already accepted Missouri state return, you must file an amended return.
How do I generate an amended return for Missouri?
To generate your amended state return, please follow the steps below.
- Select 2024 Amended Return from the navigation bar
- Pay for your amended return
- Read the "Filing an Amended Return" page, then press continue
- Select Amend State Return(s)
- Select "Amend State" from within the white box
- Scroll to the bottom of the state return menu and select Amended Return by clicking Begin
- Check the Yes box to generate your amended Missouri state return.
- Complete the "Review and Complete Amended Return" section
What if I received a refund from my original Missouri return?
If you received a refund from the state, you must report the amount on your amended return so it is included in your amended return's calculation. To do so, follow the pathway above to navigate to the Amended Return section of your state return. Next, select Review and Complete Amended Return and enter your refund amount in the box labeled "Form MO-1040, Line 46, Amount of Refund from Original Return."
What if I originally owed state taxes?
If you made a tax payment after your original state return was accepted, you must report it on your amended return so the amount is included in your calculations. To do so, follow the pathway above to navigate to the Amended Return section of your state return. Next, select Review and Complete Amended Return and enter your payment amount in the box labeled "Enter any amount paid with your original return, plus any additional income tax paid after filing."
How do I file my amended Missouri return?
Amended state returns must be paper filed. To print your amended return select Amended Return from the navigation bar followed by Print Amended Return, located at the bottom of the menu. Click the Print button to generate your PDF which contains your amended state return. Simply print, sign, and mail your amended Missouri return to paper file it.
Only the amended return (not the originally filed return) and copies of supporting documents (W-2’s, 1099’s, etc.) that support the reason for the change to the tax return need to be mailed unless the state specifically asks for other documents.
