The IRS allows e-filing of amended returns through commercial tax software like ours — but there are some restrictions. Here's what you need to know.
Looking for what happens after you file, processing times, or how to check your status? See How to Amend a Tax Return: When, Why, and What Happens Next.
How Many Amended Returns Can I E-file?
You can electronically file only one accepted amended return per original return using our program.
How Do I E-file My Amended Return?
You can only e-file federal amended returns for the current tax year.
- Once you're finished with your amended federal return, select 2025 Amended Return from the navigation bar on the left.
- Select Continue at the bottom of the page.
- Choose to e-file your amended return and follow the prompts.
Why Can't I E-file My Amended Return?
Your amended return must be filed on paper instead if:
- You're amending a prior tax year (only the current year can be e-filed)
- Your original return was filed by paper — it must also be amended by paper
- The Primary or Spouse Social Security number is different from the one on the original return
- Your filing status is different from the one on the original return
- No numerical values have changed
- You're only updating banking information, mailing address, or filing status (these alone can't be e-filed)
Can I E-file for Previous Tax Years?
No. We only support e-filing amended returns for the current year, 2025. Prior years must be filed on paper.
Can I E-file My State Amended Return?
No — state amended returns must be printed, signed, and mailed with any supporting documents. See Where Do I Mail My Amended State Return? for addresses.
How Will I Get My Refund?
You can elect to have your amended refund sent by mail as a check.
How Do I Make My Payment?
- Electronic Withdrawal: We send your payment information to the IRS for processing; it may take a few days for the debit to post.
- Mailed Payment: Use Form 1040-V (Payment Voucher), which will generate in your PDF if you choose to mail your payment during the e-file process. Follow the Form 1040-V instructions for the correct mailing address.
