Part-year residents filing Form 540NR will need to indicate their health coverage status for the time period they were residents of California, reconcile any APAS received during their resident period, and indicate the nonresident exemption to the penalty for the nonresident months.

The exemption can be found by following this path:

- Health Care Shared Responsibility Tax (Form 3853)
- Part III - Coverage Exemptions
- Choose the path for the household members that were or were not claimed on the return
- Choose the exemption "Non Resident or Part-Year Resident"
For tax year 2021, Form 3849 is also required.
