Based on your entries for the stimulus payment amounts, filing status, and dependents , the program will automatically calculate the amount of credit due to you and enter the amount on line 30. The stimulus payment is not added to your taxable income on your return.
If, when you first begin your return and skip the Recovery Rebate Question or answer No, the program automatically calculates the maximum stimulus amount you qualify for. When you go back and enter the amount you received in stimulus payments, the Credit on line 30 is adjusted to reflect the stimulus amount you received. This is evident in the refund amount. However, the tax on the return is unchanged as the stimulus payment is not taxable on your return. Only the refundable credit on line 30 is changed to reflect the amount of stimulus you indicated you received.
