If you received crop insurance proceeds and they appear in Box 9 of Form 1099-MISC, you'll need to report that income on Schedule F (Profit or Loss From Farming).
To enter crop insurance proceeds reported on Form 1099-MISC:
- Go to the Federal section.
- Select Income.
- Choose 1099-MISC.
- Enter the information from your Form 1099-MISC and select Continue.
- When asked, “Where would you like to add the income?” choose one of the following:
- Create a New Schedule F Income from Farm if you need to create a new farming activity.
- If you already have a Schedule F, select the three dots next to the existing Schedule F to link the crop insurance proceeds to that farm.
The amount reported in Box 9 will then flow to your Schedule F.
How to Report Crop Insurance Proceeds Without a Form 1099-MISC
You may receive crop insurance proceeds even if you did not receive a Form 1099-MISC. In that case, report the income directly on Schedule F.
To enter the amount directly on Schedule F:
- Go to Federal.
- Select My Forms.
- Choose Income.
- Select Profit or Loss From Farming (Schedule F).
What Are Crop Insurance Proceeds?
Crop insurance proceeds are payments you receive for crop losses caused by events such as drought, flood, hail, or other covered disasters. These payments are generally considered farm income and are typically reported on Schedule F.
Keeping accurate records of crop insurance payments can help ensure your farm income is reported correctly and reduce the chance of filing issues later.
