Certain types of income may not be reported on a traditional W-2 or 1099 form but still need to be included on your tax return. These are entered under Other Compensation.
Types of Reportable Compensation:
- Taxable scholarships and grants
- Reported on Form 1098-T, Box 5
- Only taxable if used for non-qualified expenses (e.g., room, board, travel)
- Fringe benefits
- Includes employer-paid life insurance, pension contributions, and other non-cash benefits
- Household employee income
- Includes earnings from babysitting, caretaking, housekeeping, yard work, etc.
- Must be reported if you did not receive a W-2
- Income earned while incarcerated
- Foreign earned income
- Must meet either the bona fide residence test or physical presence test
- Your tax home must be in a foreign country
How to Enter in the Program
To report these types of compensation:
- Go to the Federal section.
- Select Income, then choose “Select My Forms.”
- Choose “Less Common Income”, then select “Other Compensation.”
