Form 3468 is used to claim the federal Investment Credit for certain qualifying projects and property investments. Depending on the type of project, this credit may help reduce the amount of tax you owe.
Eligibility rules for Form 3468 have changed significantly in recent years, especially for energy-related credits. Before claiming the credit, review the most current IRS Form 3468 instructions to make sure your project still qualifies.
You may be able to use Form 3468 to claim credits related to:
- Qualifying advanced coal projects
- Qualifying gasification projects
- Qualifying advanced energy projects
- Rehabilitation projects, including certain historic rehabilitation expenses
- Energy and clean energy projects that meet IRS requirements
If you lease property rather than own it, you may still qualify for the credit in certain situations. See Part I of Form 3468 and the IRS instructions for details about lessee eligibility.
