Our tax software does not support preparing federal tax returns for tax year 2022 or earlier. These prior-year returns are no longer available in the online program. If you need to file a 2022, 2021, or older return, you'll need to complete and mail paper forms provided by the IRS.
How to Prepare a 2022 or Older Return
Even though our software can't generate these older returns, you can still file them directly with the IRS by completing them manually.
Steps to Complete a 2022 or Older Return
- Visit the IRS Prior-Year Forms Library
- Select the tax year you need to file (2022, 2021, or earlier).
-
Download the required forms, such as:
- Form 1040
- Applicable schedules
- Instructions and worksheets
- Complete the forms manually or use the IRS fillable PDF versions, if available.
- Print and sign the completed return.
- Mail the return to the IRS using the appropriate mailing address for that tax year.
IRS Refund Claim Deadlines
Generally, you must file your return within:
- 3 years from the original filing deadline, or
- 2 years from the date you paid the tax,
whichever is later.
If the deadline has passed:
- The IRS will not issue a refund.
- Any overpayment generally cannot be applied to another tax year.
- The refund is forfeited under federal law.
Why File an Old Return If You Can't Get a Refund?
Even when a refund is no longer available, filing a missing return can still be important.
1. Resolve Unfiled-Year Compliance Issues
The IRS may contact taxpayers about missing returns through:
- Compliance reviews
- Collection notices
- Substitute-for-return assessments
Filing the missing return can help correct IRS records and resolve outstanding issues.
2. Address Tax Debt and Collection Activity
If you owe taxes for a prior year:
- Penalties and interest may continue to accrue.
- The IRS may pursue collection actions.
- Filing the return may allow you to explore payment arrangements or other resolution options.
3. Support Financial or Legal Requirements
Prior-year tax returns are often requested for:
- Mortgage applications
- Student financial aid (FAFSA)
- Immigration matters
- Loan applications
- Income verification requests
4. Satisfy State Filing Requirements
Many states require taxpayers to file prior-year state returns even when the federal refund period has expired. Filing the federal return may be a necessary step to complete any required state filings.
