According to the Rhode Island instruction booklet, beginning January 1, 2023, Military Retirement will be exempted from Rhode Island Income Tax.
Prior to this change, Rhode Island allowed a subtraction to your reported retirement income if you met the "full retirement age". For tax years 2021 to 2023, to see if you can claim this modification, please review this Rhode Island instructional booklet on taxable retirement income.
For tax year 2024, you will need to fully exempt your military retirement using the modification below with your manual entry. Do not include an amount already reduced that qualified for modification taxable retirement income from certain pension plans or annuities under R.I. Gen. Laws §44-30-12(c)(9).
