Massachusetts tax rules differ from federal tax rules. While the federal return allows taxpayers to choose between the standard deduction and itemized deductions, Massachusetts does not provide a standard deduction.
Instead, Massachusetts allows certain deductions that may reduce your Massachusetts taxable income, regardless of whether you claimed the federal standard deduction or itemized deductions on your federal return.
Some deduction information may transfer automatically from your federal return when applicable. However, Massachusetts also provides several state-specific deductions and adjustments that can be entered directly on your Massachusetts return.
Common Massachusetts Deductions
Depending on your situation, you may qualify for deductions such as:
- Rental deduction
- Student loan interest deduction
- College tuition deduction
- Health Savings Account (HSA) deduction
- Self-employed health insurance deduction
- Charitable contribution deduction
- Commuter deduction
- Certain retirement contribution deductions
- Other deductions reported on Massachusetts Schedule Y
Massachusetts deductions are calculated under state law and may differ from deductions claimed on your federal return.
How Do I Enter Massachusetts Deductions in the Program?
To manually enter or review Massachusetts deductions:
- State
- Edit Massachusetts Return (Click the 3 dots)
- Deductions
From this section, you can review transferred information and enter or adjust Massachusetts-specific deduction amounts as needed.
Important Note
Claiming the federal standard deduction does not prevent you from claiming Massachusetts deductions. Massachusetts determines allowable deductions independently of the federal standard deduction rules. As a result, many taxpayers who use the federal standard deduction may still qualify for deductions on their Massachusetts return.
