If you are a New York resident who works in New Jersey, your W-2 may have amounts for both New York and New Jersey.
If your W-2 contains both of these amounts in Box 16, the New Jersey return will pull both dollar amounts to the New Jersey return.
To correct this on your New Jersey return, you will need to adjust the New York information from the W-2. Since New York is your resident state, the income will be pulled automatically to the state return and does not need to be entered on the W-2. However, you may need to print and mail the NY return to the state.
To make the correction, go to:
- Federal Section
- Income
- W-2
- Edit the necessary W-2 form
- The amount listed in box 16 for New York would be the difference in the total income and the amount listed in Box 16 for New Jersey
