Curious how your itemized deductions stack up against those claimed by other taxpayers? Our software includes a comparison tool that lets you see how certain deductions on your return compare with national averages.
This can be a helpful way to review your deductions and better understand how your tax return compares with typical filing patterns across the country.
How to View the Itemized Deduction Comparison Tool
Before using the comparison feature, make sure you've entered all of your itemized deductions into your return.
Then follow these steps:
- Select Deductions from the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Check the Guide Me box and click Continue to start the Deductions guide.
- Answer No to each question in the guide until you reach the Congratulations! page.
- On the Congratulations! page, select Would you like to see how some of your deductions compare with the national averages?
What You'll See
The tool will display a table that compares:
- The national average deduction amount for selected itemized deductions
- The amount you entered on your federal tax return
This comparison is for informational purposes only. A deduction that is higher or lower than the national average does not automatically mean there's a problem with your return. Every taxpayer's situation is different, and deduction amounts can vary widely based on income, location, expenses, and other factors.
Why This Feature Can Be Helpful
Comparing your deductions to national averages can help you:
- Review the deductions you've entered
- Identify deductions that may deserve a second look
- Better understand how your tax situation compares with other taxpayers
Remember, the most important thing is that your deductions are accurate and supported by your records, not whether they match national averages.
If you're deciding between taking the standard deduction and itemizing deductions, make sure all eligible deductible expenses have been entered before comparing your options. Our software will help determine which choice provides the greater tax benefit.
