The Family Tax Credit, also known as the Credit for Other Dependents (ODC), provides a tax credit for dependents who don't qualify for the Child Tax Credit.
This credit can help reduce your tax bill if you support certain family members or dependents who fall outside the Child Tax Credit rules.
Who Qualifies for the Credit for Other Dependents?
You may be eligible for this credit if you claim a dependent who:
- Is age 17 or older at the end of the taxable year
- Has an ITIN instead of a Social Security number
- Is an elderly parent or other relative who depends on you for support
- Is another qualifying dependent who doesn't meet the requirements for the Child Tax Credit
How Much Is the Credit?
The Credit for Other Dependents is worth up to $500 for each qualifying dependent.
Unlike the Child Tax Credit, this credit is nonrefundable. That means it can reduce the amount of tax you owe, but it won't increase your refund if your tax liability is already zero.
How Is the Credit Calculated?
You don't need to calculate the credit yourself. When you enter your dependent information, our software automatically:
- Determines whether the dependent qualifies for the Child Tax Credit or the Credit for Other Dependents.
- Applies the appropriate credit based on IRS rules.
- Includes the credit on your tax return if you're eligible.
Child Tax Credit vs. Credit for Other Dependents
| Credit | Qualifying Dependent | Maximum Credit | Refundable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Child Tax Credit | Child under age 17 with a valid SSN | Up to $2,200 per child | Partially refundable |
| Credit for Other Dependents | Dependents who don't qualify for the Child Tax Credit | Up to $500 per dependent | No |
Where Can I See the Credit on My Return?
After completing your return, you can review your credits in the Review/Summary section under the Tax and Credits section on the return summary.
If you qualify, the Credit for Other Dependents will automatically be included in your tax calculation.
Our software will calculate the correct credit based on your dependent’s age, relationship to you, identification number, and other eligibility requirements.
