Yes. You can import a PDF copy of a prior-year tax return when starting a new return in our software.
We currently support standard Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR PDF files from many popular online tax preparation providers, as long as the PDF is saved on your device.
Importing a prior-year return can save time by automatically bringing over certain personal information instead of entering it manually.
What Information Can Be Imported?
When you import a supported 1040 or 1040-SR PDF, we may be able to pull in the following information:
- Filing status
- Taxpayer information (and spouse information for joint returns), including:
- Name
- Address
- Social Security number
- Occupation
After the import is complete, you'll have an opportunity to review the imported details before continuing.
When Can I Import My PDF File?
You must choose the PDF import option when you first create and begin your tax return for the year.
Important: If you skip the PDF import step during setup, you won't be able to return later and import the file into that same return.
Because of this, it's a good idea to have your prior-year PDF available before you begin.
Can I Choose Which Information to Use?
Yes. After the import, you can decide how much of the imported information you'd like to keep.
You can:
- Use all imported information
- Use only selected items
- Remove imported information and enter it manually
This gives you the flexibility to verify everything and make changes if your situation has changed since your previous return.
Important Reminder
PDF import is only available at the start of a new return. Once you've moved past that step, the import feature cannot be used later for that return.
If you plan to import a prior-year Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR PDF, be sure to do so before continuing with the rest of your tax return.
