When using our do-it-yourself tax program, you’ll need to provide certain personal details to create and file your tax return. This information helps verify your identity and ensures your return is processed accurately.
Required Information for Everyone on the Return
You must enter the following details for yourself, your spouse (if applicable), and any dependents:
- Full name
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Date of birth
Additional Information for the Taxpayer and Spouse
You may also need to provide the following details for yourself and/or your spouse:
- Occupation
- Mailing address
- Phone number
- Text notification preference
- Dependency status (whether someone else can claim you or your spouse on their return)
- Deceased status and date of death (if applicable)
- Military combat zone information (if applicable)
- IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), if one has been assigned
Identity Verification for Electronic Filing
If you electronically filed your tax return last year, you’ll need one of the following to verify your identity and sign your return:
- Your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), or
- Your Self-Select PIN from your previous return
